1. Grieving and housing allowances

The staff and agents’ financial woes were also relieved with grievance allowances granted and an additional income guaranteed. Manulife also granted housing allowances and low interest loans to 21 staff and agents in the amount of almost US$30,000 (IDR274 million).

  2. Shelters
Four additional refuge homes were set up, these each housed five Manulifers and their families.

  3. Counseling
With financial support now being offered, Manulife turned its attention to offering emotional support. Manulife provided counseling in one of the four shelters, it had set up, for spouses, parents, or children of Manulifers and students and teachers of Manulife schools who were traumatized by the disaster and needed more assistance. In providing counseling services it worked together with a team from the University of Indonesia. The counseling team first assessed the problems faced by their clients: They then provided counseling to treat and help their clients to rebuild their confidence.
